This pin honors Swaps, winner of the 1955 Kentucky Derby with four-time Derby winning jockey Willie Shoemaker up. Swaps beat the odds with his Derby win, out-racing the favorite, Nashua, who was ridden by Eddie Arcaro. Although Nashua would go on to win the Preakness and the Belmont that year, Swaps would win 19 of his 25 career starts and share the title of 1956 Horse of the Year with Nashua. He was bred and owned by Rex C. Ellsworth and trained by Mesh Tenney. In his retirement, Swaps would sire 1963 Derby winner Chateaugay, rank #20 on The Blood-Horse magazine’s Top 100 Racehorses of the 20th Century and receive an induction to the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 1963.
