1948 Citation Tac Pin
This pin honors Citation, winner of the 1948 Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown with U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee and 1938 and 1941 Derby winning jockey Eddie Arcaro up. Citation raced with his stable-mate Coaltown for much of the race, only to pull away and win by 3.5 lengths. He would go on to win the Preakness by 5.5 lengths and the Belmont by 3.5 to become the 8th Triple Crown winner. Citation set a single-season record in 1948 by bringing $709,470 in winnings from his 20 starts that year. He was bred and owned by the legendary Warren Wright at Calumet Farms near Lexington, Kentucky, and trained by U.S. Hall of Fame inductee and 1931 and 1941 Derby winner Ben A. Jones. Jones partnered with his son, Jimmy, on Citation; Jimmy would become an excellent horse trainer in his own right.
Citation has won a barrage of awards, most notably Horse of the Year in 1948, a #3 ranking in The Blood-Horse magazine’s Top 100 Racehorses of the 20th Century and a 1959 induction into the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame.
A Kentucky Derby Museum Exclusive.
