The Large Bow Headband Fascinator

Available in ivory, royal or black.

Hats off to History! Opulent headwear has been a staple of racing fashion since the 19th century; and the Kentucky Derby has traditionally been a destination for the fashionable since its beginning in 1875. Recalling the charm and decadence of famous English races like Ascot and the Epsom Derby, Churchill Downs transforms into a runway on Derby Day. While large-brimmed, lavishly decorated hats are classic for the racetrack, recent fashion trends have seen the fascinator and headband hat become more and more popular.

Most of the Kentucky Derby Museum's 2015 collection of Derby Headwear is constructed from a material called sinamay. Sinamay is a natural fiber that can be starched to create the sometimes avant garde structure and shape of our hats and fascinators. Because the material resists pliancy, be sure to store your sinamay hats and fascinators in a hat box that will protect the integrity of the shape. For a more travel and storage friendly option, organza or horsehair hats are a popular choice. Organza hats are wrinkle free and crushable, perfect to toss in a purse or suitcase. And although the name suggests otherwise, horsehair is a pliable synthetic material recognized by the natural hair-like quality of weaving. Although it is not a crushable as organza, horsehair is easier to store and re-shape than sinamay.
