1986 Ferdinand Tac Pin
$5.00
This pin honors Ferdinand, winner of the 1986 Kentucky Derby with U.S. Racing Hall of Fame jockey Bill “The Shoe” Shoemaker up. Although he fell behind after a rough start from the gate, Ferdinand and Shoemaker rallied to pull ahead in the upper stretch, winning over Bold Arrangement. Although Ferdinand would not go on to win either the Preakness or the Belmont, he would win the 1987 Breeder’s Cup over Alysheba, winner of that year’s Kentucky Derby. He would be awarded horse of the year that year. Ferdinand was bred and owned by Howard B. and Elizabeth A. Keck and trained by Charlie Edward Wittingham.
